Prior to the current building, a smaller GPO Building existed on the same site fronting George Street. The building had an impressive facade, however, the rest of the building was not especially well built, necessitating the construction of the new building. Ornate columns from the colonnade in the facade were redistributed across Sydney to a range of locations where they can be found today, including Bradley’s Head which marks one nautical mile from Fort Denison.
